Where would you want to go? Sylt? Venice? Or simply to the theatre around the corner? Eight people sit in front of their screens, physically separated from each other, yet travelling together – in their minds. The burning questions of one of them about his grandmother’s odyssey after the Second World War awaken wistful memories of his own escape from Lithuania in the other. The pressing crowds in front of the gigantic displays of sweet goods in the Venetian restaurant are pure la dolce vita, but in times of social distancing it’s hard to imagine.
After a long car journey, the weightless drifting in the sea off Sylt is like floating in space. And the great-grandson takes his great-grandfather on a trip to the theatre, where he dances for him, wearing a girl’s nightgown.
‘Thank you for thinking of me!’ says the great-grandfather.
In Road Trip, our first digital project during the coronavirus pandemic, we embark on a journey via Zoom – and even though we have to keep our distance at the moment, there’s one thing we won’t let go of: thinking of each other.
