It’s a key text of the Enlightenment. Whenever it comes to the tolerance of religions and their followers, it’s quoted: the Ring Parable from the play ‘Nathan the Wise’ by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. In times of ever-accelerating modernisation, one might think that religion and faith no longer play a major role. But the opposite is the case: the gods are returning and Cologne is their capital. In no other German city are there so many different religious communities.
Chorweiler is particularly representative of this. Members of many different faiths live there in a very small area and follow their religious practices They all stand on stage as a choir of believers and weave their personal stories and beliefs into the famous Ring parable.
We go on a research trip to a neighbourhood that is notorious and yet so lovable. Together with its choir, we search for answers to the eternal questions: Why do we believe? Why do we not believe?
